Dresses make life so easy...just throw on ONE piece and you're done.
Plus, the right dress can really play up your assets and elongate your body (and legs!).
Here are a few that I like and why. Click on each photo for more details.
The beautiful blue color works for so many skin tones! I also love the placement of the flowers at each side of the dress which creates the look of a cinched waist and accentuated curves.
Everyone needs a simple tee-shirt dress that goes from grocery shopping to a casual dinner. Choose a slightly relaxed style (like this one) to allow a little room around the mid-section. I love the pop of color at the bottom of this dress!
Calvin Klein makes great dresses and I love this figure flattering faux wrap dress (no worrying about the skirt flying open!). Accessorize with another bold color such as royal blue or let the dress be the focal point by adding neutrals.
This Donna Morgan wrap works well for most body shapes and the color are fabulous! This dress will keep you wrinkle free and the bold pattern distracts the eye (camouflaging figure challenges).
The best thing about all of these dresses (besides the fabulous styles) is that they're all under $150!

Cork is no longer just for wine bottles....it's a fashion statement!
I happen to love the texture and interest it adds to any outfit. It's modern, fun, and looks fabulous when paired with metallics or a pop of color.
The thing that really makes it really work is that it's a neutral, so the color goes with everything and it can be dressed up or down. Oh and cork shoes will elongate the leg-line!
Do you own any cork pieces?

I just got back from an amazing trip to Quebec City. Richard and I have made it a tradition to celebrate our anniversary in this very romantic place! This year, we stayed at Hotel Le Priori--an stunning boutique hotel located in the lower section of the historic district.
Although the building is historic, there is nothing "old" about Le Priori. The rooms are chic and spacious offering every modern amenity including a fridge, microwave, flat screen television, Nepresso machine, and so much more.
"Loungewear"
The second floor private "spa" complete with a flatscreen television and deck with hot-tub.
Every morning I sipped espresso while gazing at the view. This is living!
Picture perfect.
This is how we got up to the "spa"...not easy after a few glasses of wine!
______________________________
Sightseeing in Quebec City means a TON of walking, so comfort is a must! We lived in jeans, tee-shirts and sneakers
These Nike Air-max Tailwinds literally saved my feet.
They're the most comfy sneakers ever.
I brought my The Sak cross-body bag for long walks. I love the metallic color and roomy design--some cross-body bags are just too small to fit all my "gear". Another The Sak bag that I like here
For the first two nights we bought a "picnic" from the local farmer's market and ate on our deck.
On the last night of the trip, we splurged and ate dinner at Restaurant Toast at Le Priori
I wore this linen-weave tee-shirt maxi (similar here)--the side slits gave it dressier look for evening.
Since Toast is located outside in the hotel courtyard, I added a jacket for warmth. This Lou and Grey Loft knit denim jacket was such a great find and travels so well (no wrinkles!).
This fun fringed necklace was a boutique find --it adds a little "boho style". I also like these-- here and here
Many of the roads in Quebec City are cobblestone, so walking in heels is tough.
These flat suede J. Crew sandals are so comfortable that I wear them with everything (as you can see from the "worn in" marks). Here they are in gold--I have those too!
I dressed up the outfit with my favorite J. Crew Factory Store metallic clutch. (on sale for just $48.00!)
Enter into the magic of Toast.
This restaurant is not only breath-taking, but the food is incredible and the service impeccable.
After dinner, a walk was in order to work off the zillion calories we consumed.
The city streets are so gorgeous at night!
We loved Hotel Le Prior so much that we already booked the same room for next year!
If you're looking for a very special place to visit, I highly recommend this outstanding hotel in one of the most beautiful cities around.
Here's to eleven wonderful years of marriage. Love you Richard!

There's nothing like a perfectly fitting black dress to take you from the office to cocktails.
I paired this dress with a nude bag and sandals keeping things simple and sophisticated.
These BP sandals from Nordstrom are priced right ($59.95!), incredibly comfy and look just like the Stuart Weitzman version (the nudist). The neutral color does does great things for the legs!
If heels don't work for your feet, try a pair of nude pointy toe flats for comfort--this style works so well with a dress.
I especially love this fitted black sheath (similar) because of the textured overlay, making it a bit more interesting than a plain version.
We had a lot of fun shooting this blog. Thought you might want to peek at some out-takes!
My friend Kim (in the background) yawning...guess I was boring!
We had the brainstorm to include Kim's adorable Wheaton Terrier in the shoot, but she had other ideas. Good thing I was wearing flats!

Boho style is nothing new. Back in the late 60's and 70's I was in love with peasant blouses and fringe. Even my prom gown circa 1979 was a white gauze number with embroidered flowers down the middle. And like everything else, what's old is new again. Peasant tops, flowy skirts, fringed bags, and embroidered dresses are all back in style and reminiscent of times past.
Although I can't say that my style is completely boho, I do like its laid-back and casual vibe. I'm a huge fan of long unusual necklaces and fabric bags. And who doesn't love the feminine feel of a flowy top? Are you ready to dress like a peasant?

Sometimes a few great pieces are all you need. to make a statement
Today's outfit is a royal blue Joan Vass flowy top similar here and here with black Joe's ankle jeans. I love this color combination--the vivid shade of blue looks so fresh when paired with black.
What sold me on this top was the cowl back. I love feminine details.
I bought this statement necklace on sale at J. Crew last season similar here--I wear it all the time with everything from a tee and jeans to a cocktail dress. Gold clutch from J. Crew Factory Store and peep toe black suede slingback similar here. Notice I haven't loaded on the jewelry --the bold color of the top and statement necklace hold their own. Plus I'm a big believer that less is more.
Life doesn't get much better than this!
Have a great weekend everyone---hope you're doing something fun!

I recently bought this fabulous Hinge "topper" at Nordstrom. My original plan was to wear it with a tee shirt and jeans--but then I had the idea that it could double-duty as a bathing suit cover-up. Brilliant isn't it?

I don't swim and I can't say that I love wearing a bathing suit these days, however this
lightweight coat provides coverage where I want it (around the mid-section) while transforming my plain bathing suit into an "outfit". I'm also wearing a comfortable Michael Kors tankini that has ruching around the middle (great for the tummy!). Check out this suit too for a super flattering style!
Several years ago I had skin cancer so I'm extra cautious about getting too much sun...another reason to love this piece!
Unfortunately, this Hinge topper is sold out--but I found some similar pieces at great prices for you HERE , HERE, and HERE . Don't forget a straw tote, sunglasses and sandals too! And off to the beach you go! |

This post has nothing to do with clothes, but lots to do with our health....our skin health that is. Several years ago I noticed a small red mark on my neck, which looked like a mosquito bite. After a few months it was still there, so I visited my dermatologist. It wasn't a bite, but rather basal cell skin cancer that had to be surgically removed. Luckily I caught it early on and I barely have a scar.
A month ago, I developed a red mark on my nose. Within a few weeks it went away so I thought nothing of it. However soon after, a little brown spot surfaced in the same place. Initially I thought it was an age spot, but because of my overly cautious nature I got it checked out. Unfortunately, it was pre-cancerous--fortunately I caught it early on. A quick hit with liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery it's called) was all that was needed...luckily this should wipe it out with minimal scarring (nothing that make-up can't cover anyway). Skin cancer on the nose can be very difficult to treat and can involve plastic surgery. I'm so glad I listened to my instincts.
So why am I sharing this with you? Because I want to stress the importance of yearly visits to the dermatologist for skin cancer screenings and to also be aware of skin changes (know your body!). Get suspicious spots checked--early detection is key!
Wear sunscreen religiously, wear a hat, and avoid those dangerous tanning beds. If you want some color, I love Jergen's Natural Glow (this one actually has added sunscreen!) and it is SO worth the money to invest in a good sunscreen such as La Roche-Posay Buy a pretty hat and look stylish this summer while keeping the sun off your face.
Growing up in the 60's and 70's, no one ever thought about the hazards of spending hours baking in the sun--back then baby oil was our sunscreen! I remember going to the beach WANTING to get sunburned so my skin would glow (CRAZY!). Years of skin damage is now catching up to me and I'm paying the price. It pains me when I see women sizzling in the sun or going to dangerous tanning salons. There is a huge price to pay for a tan. Is it really worth it? I'll take pale, thank you.
Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July and wore sunscreen!

This blog is on denim shorts, however there is a story here as well.
Last weekend, my amazing friend Kim opened up her gorgeous beach house for my photo shoot.
This is Kim....she is beautiful inside and out and a true mid-life fashionista.
This is Kim's stunning beach house located on New Hampshire's Seacoast.
Not only is Kim warm, kind and funny, but she is also uber-talented. She creates all types of amazing things including one of a kind jewelry, belt buckles and pet accessories. Oh and she's an incredible artist with a passion for painting dogs. Here are a few examples of her work--to contact her go to Sadie Style
Fancy dog collar |
We started out the day shooting on her sun-porch--not only because the light was so perfect, but also because the color-scheme was simply stunning (Kim painted the picture of the dog in the background)
Now on to beach attire! I put together a casual summer outfit that's perfect for a stroll along the boardwalk. I'm all about the lace-front tee---put it on your shopping list! I love the feminine detail and texture that camouflages the mid-section. Plain white tees can be see-through, but this one offers a bit more coverage-- so there's no skin peeking through! I paired it with rolled denim shorts, a colorful straw bag and sneakers (on sale!). Easy-peasy.
I couldn't resist switching out my plain silver bar necklace for one of Kim's fabulous one-of-a-kind pieces to complete this outfit....it's such a stunning statement piece and I adore the color. Check her Etsy site here.
Shorts are tricky. I have to say that they're not my favorite thing to wear these days (I'm actually more comfy in a dress). The cut and length have to be just right to work---otherwise they can look baggy and droopy. I do best when shorts are fitted and not too long or they cut my leg off at a funny place--not a good look for me! For most women, a fitted cut that hits above the knee works best. What's your most flattering length? Love these from Kut.
Because I am a ring addict, I chose this silver Lucky Brand white stone ring.
And now comes the rest of the story. After shooting indoors, we decided to take some photos outside. I mentioned that it would have been great to show a model wearing longer shorts--- and voila, I heard my name being called! Life is so strange sometimes----my friend Eileen was visiting her friends down the street and guess what she was wearing?? Yep, longer jean shorts! Poor Eileen was suckered into an impromptu photo shoot--what a good sport! Check out her adorable metallic pointy toe flats HERE...this style is so leg-flattering!
And if things weren't fun enough, we got to play with Roxy the rescue dog...the cutest Yorkshire Terrier. LOVE her!
Grab your floppy hat and have a great 4th of July!
