This year Richard and I decided to do something different for Valentine's Day. With a blizzard expected and frigid temps in the single digits, we wanted stay local and avoid walking around in the freezing cold. We are huge fans of Newburyport, MA--a lively seaport town that has fabulous shopping, excellent restaurants and gorgeous scenery. In the middle of town, sits a stunning inn called The Compass Rose. We've passed it a million times, always saying how "one of these days" we should try it out--so we got a last minute reservation and away we went.
The Compass Rose is a federal reproduction built (and owned) by the incredibly talented and well-known builder Al Clifford. From the floors to the woodwork, the attention to detail is amazing. The place is gorgeous!

The working fireplace is such a nice touch---especially on a cold and snowy night! |
We were especially taken with the third floor "observatory" where the views of Newburyport are spectacular (especially at night with the lights out!)
Isn't this the coziest little nook to curl up and read a book?
Breakfast in the beautiful dining room was such a treat.
Richard found a great spot to sip coffee and read the morning paper.
There is a reason why this inn gets five stars on Trip Advisor...it's one special place.
If you're thinking of visiting The Compass Rose Inn, tell Gloria I sent you and here's a way to save 20% off the rate until 3/31/15! Check out Newburyport.com for details.
While you're in Newburyport, don't miss out on fabulous shopping! Some of my favorites are Kaya, for stunning and unique jewelry and Amy Williams , French Lessons, and Smitten for gorgeous clothing and accessories.
Hope you all had a wonderful Valentine's Day!
