My Casting Call

Monday, March 13, 2017

I know I've been a little quiet lately, but my life has been crazy. We are putting our house on the market in a few weeks, Uncommon Threads is super busy, and in the middle of all the chaos I have to go and fracture my hand. As if that's not bad enough, Richard has both wrists in splints for severe tendonitis. We're quite the pair (of hands that is!).

When I found out that I'd be in a cast for at least 6-8 weeks I was devastated.  Let's face it--it's uncomfortable, ugly and makes doing the simplest of tasks a PITA.

Here are my biggest complaints:
I can't wash or style my hair
Putting contacts in takes forever (and I've dropped quite a few)
I can't cook
I can't sign my name
I can't cut up my food
I can't tie my shoes.
I can't get my cast through the sleeves of my clothes.
Typing hurts

So after whining, complaining, ranting and crying, I decided to make the best out of it.  I enlisted the talents of my artist friend Stephanie Mobbs Deady to beautify my cast.  After all, if I must wear a cast, it should at least look like a work of art!
Stephanie and I had so much fun. She played with colors and patterns, and I watched in awe as she created art on fiberglass. Talk about talent!
My cast was like no other--it was a masterpiece.
After some Kahlua and coffee we had a"cast party".
And then we got plain silly.
However my beautiful cast only lasted a few days. As luck would have it, I had some complications. My hand started swelling and required a new cast (I was SOOOO sad to say goodbye to my beautiful painted cast). Then nerve issues caused yet another cast change.
I'm now on my 4th and hopefully final cast.
This new cast may not be beautiful, but it's SO much more comfy. It even has velcro so I can loosen or tighten it.
When Stephanie gets back from vacation, I might see if we can jazz this cast up a bit. Maybe some jewels or a little glitz?
Let's cast a wide net of ideas. OK corny.

XO Susan
